My name is Barbara Marbach, I’ve been a member of KPFK for over 20 years. It’s where I go for news and information regarding current events, economics, music, the arts, health, wellness and diverse community cultural perspectives.

I’m committed to Pacifica’s mission; to provide outlets for the creative skills and to promote and aid creative activities which will serve the cultural welfare of the community. Engage in activities that shall contribute to lasting understanding between nations and between the individuals of all nations, races, creeds and colors; to gather and disseminate information on the causes of conflict between any and all such groups without corporate funding or sponsorship.

I’m very grateful that KPFK provides this “ Commons”, a precious community resource to be valued and protected.

My experience as the LSB Vice-chair and Chair of Governance committee since 2016 has provided the opportunity to connect with other KPFK Listener members, facilitate meetings according to Robert Rules. Institute a decorum policy for members and public input to ensure all are respected and heard. Bring forth motions to create evaluation tools for KPFK staff. Motions to PNB to expedite the 2014 & 2015 Audits and much more! Prior to my election to the LSB in 2016, I served as parliamentarian for the LSB for 2015. I am a member of the CandidateSlate.org.

I believe my experience will be an asset to KPFK LSB and will do my best to promote and ensure Pacifica’s mission and move the LSB forward to realize financial stability, sustainability, professionalism and to return highly regarded programming.

I’ve lived in Northeast LA over 40 years and work over 25 years for a state nonprofit social service agency providing supports and services to individuals with developmental disabilities as a special education advocate. This requires a legal, education, mediation and counseling skill set which has provided me the rich opportunity to assist people from diverse ability, cultural and social economic communities.

In this role, I also facilitate several inter-agency forums bringing various stakeholders together in the common goal of serving children with developmental disabilities and their families. I was the chairperson of the Los Angeles Unified School District Class Member Review Committee of the Chanda Smith Consent v LAUSD Federal consent decree process for over 10 years. This committee was responsible for monitoring the district’s special education restructuring efforts to comply with this federal consent decree. I was the elected Education Director on the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council for 4 years. I have served on many non-profit BODs over the years.

Since I volunteered as chairperson for Local Station Board and chairperson of the Governance Committee since June 2016, I have a clear understanding of Pacifica Foundation and KPFK LSB roles, process and culture. When elected, you will get a knowledgeable, professional, and effective consensus builder listener member representative that will only make KPFK stronger and prosper.

1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?

2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?

   With the new General Manager and Program Director KPFK has demonstrated increased professionalism which carries across the air waves.

3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?

A full-time volunteer coordinator will be very helpful. There needs to be an ongoing social media coordinator as well in order to connect with younger audiences. This will increase our visibility and outreach efforts! Many Listeners are proud to be KPFK members and would like attend events and perform outreach activities at the KPFK table.

4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.

5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?

Connecting with local communities. Some of our programmers address interesting and provocative topics and themes. We can connect with local communities via social media and Meet Ups that can address a specific topic discussion and activities. These could be a monthly event that would increase awareness about the station thus increase our listener membership. Of course, a volunteer coordinator would be essential for this endeavor
